Way back in the year 1888, a lady by the name of Georgiana Burton Pittock who was married to the famous pioneering publisher Henry Pittock began a rose garden in Portland that was meant to show off her roses to her friends. And, with some coaxing from a one-time president of the Rose Society, there began a rose test garden in the year 1917 that also had the backing of the American Rose Society. It is for these reasons that Portland was then and is still today called the City of Roses.

This garden was constructed in the year 1969, exactly fifty years from the award of the first Gold Medal.
