Some Of The Most Famous Rose Gardens Of Portland

Way back in the year 1888, a lady by the name of Georgiana Burton Pittock who was married to the famous pioneering publisher Henry Pittock began a rose garden in Portland that was meant to show off her roses to her friends. Since that time, her rose garden in Portland has become so famous that it is part of an annual show of roses for the Portland Rose Society.

And, with some coaxing from a one-time president of the Rose Society, there began a rose test garden in the year 1917 that also had the backing of the American Rose Society. During those years, Portland, Oregon was quite famous for its roses and in fact there was about twenty miles of streets bordered with roses. It is for these reasons that Portland was then and is still today called the City of Roses.

Oldest Representative Garden

From its inception in 1917, the rose garden of Portland is still the oldest representative garden in the United States and in spite of World War I, roses still got sent to it from many different countries from all parts of the world that were meant to be tested and also for keeping them safe from the bombing that was taking place in Europe.

The rose garden in Portland has its main mission in testing many different varieties of roses and each year. The City of Portland Gold Medal Awards are given to the topmost new roses and the first such award was given in the year 1919, proving that it is the oldest rose testing facility in the United States.

To commemorate fifty years of these awards, the Portland Rose Society constructed another rose garden in Portland, which is known as Gold Medal Garden. This garden was constructed in the year 1969, exactly fifty years from the award of the first Gold Medal. This place is very popular for holding weddings and there is also plenty of choice viewing of the best roses at this venue.

Another rose garden Portland is the one that is known as the International Rose Garden which is one among the twenty-four official testing sites for the All-America Rose Selection (AARS), a non-profit organization dealing with introducing and promoting roses of exceptional quality. And, another rose garden in Portland is the one named Miniature Rose Garden, one of among six testing grounds for the American Rose Societys minute rose testing program.

Thus, the City of Roses has its fair share of rose gardens and anyone interested in this particular variety of flower will have a lot that is of interest to him or her in Portland.

These types of plants need the proper environment to thrive, and taking the time to choose these plants correctly will reward you with plenty of color and beauty for years to come.
